March 2020 started like any other, and in the Municipal Departments, we were getting ready for elections, and town meeting. Who would have thought that a COVID Pandemic would change our lives the way it did. On March 15, 2020, Town Administrator, Matthew Wojcik, posted the first Public Notice announcing the formation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) along with the first phase of Town closings, which included the school and Adult Social Center, followed by the Governor’s Stay at Home Advisory.
The EOC recognized the need to provide meals to our seniors and residents in need. Council on Aging Director, Patrice Rousseau and Town Engineer William Cundiff were tasked with starting a “Community Food Outreach Program”. At the onset, the program served 70 seniors and by the end of the program, they served 80 seniors and 69 residents at need. A contract was entered into with Bus Company, Tellstone and Son, Inc, to deliver the meals, and driver Cyndi LeDuc was at the ready.
The program was a success due to volunteers, Municipal Employees; School Officials, and cafeteria workers. The program was also successful because of donations from the many generous residents of Douglas. Thank you to everyone, you made a difference in many lives.
